IELTS Writing Task 2: the four-paragraph structure
A simple, repeatable structure for the argument essay — plus the mistakes that cost the most half-bands.
Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1 in your Writing score. Here’s the structure we teach in the first lessons.
1. Introduction (2 sentences)
Paraphrase the question in your own words and state your position straight away. No generic openers like “Nowadays, many people think…”.
2. First body paragraph
One main idea, explained and supported by a concrete example.
3. Second body paragraph
Your second idea — or the opposing view, if the question asks for it.
4. Conclusion (2 sentences)
Restate your position. No new ideas.
The mistakes that cost most
- Not answering every part of the question. The most common and most costly mistake.
- Memorised “fancy” vocabulary. Examiners spot it immediately.
- Paragraphs without one clear central idea.
Write, get feedback, rewrite. One essay corrected and rewritten is worth more than three written and forgotten.
